Keeping Your Furry Friends Warm and Happy This Winter

Keeping Your Furry Friends Warm and Happy This Winter

As winter settles in, our routines shift to cozy nights by the fire, extra blankets, and mugs of hot chocolate. But, as much as we layer up and stay warm, our furry friends need a little extra TLC during the colder months too. Here at Rawrum, we believe that winter is a perfect time to prioritize both warmth and enrichment for your pets. Here are some tips and tricks to ensure your pets stay warm, happy, and stimulated all season long.

Layer Up with Pet-Friendly Winter Wear
While many of our pets have natural coats that keep them relatively warm, some breeds (and most smaller animals) can feel the chill just like we do. A soft, fitted coat or sweater can work wonders for dogs on winter walks, especially for breeds with short fur, like greyhounds or dachshunds. Cats generally stay indoors more during winter, but if your feline friend enjoys some outdoor time, consider a sweater they can comfortably roam around in. Look for materials that won’t irritate their skin and avoid anything that might restrict movement.

Rawrum Tip: Pick colors and styles that reflect your pet's personality, and make sure the fit is snug but not too tight. If you’re worried about washing, look for machine-friendly fabrics to make life easier 🎭.

Create Cozy Nooks and Nests Indoors
Winter means pets tend to sleep more and need somewhere extra cozy. Create warm spots in your home where your pets can snuggle up. This could be as simple as adding a few extra blankets to their beds, using a plush pet bed, or even putting their bed near a warm (but safe) heat source. Consider investing in thermal pet beds, which have a layer that reflects heat back to your pet, keeping them warm without extra electricity costs.

Rawrum Tip: Rotate blankets regularly, as a familiar smell can add comfort. Also, giving pets a space away from drafts is ideal; keep an eye on where drafts tend to creep in around windows and doors 🚪.

Get Moving with Interactive Indoor Play
While we often think of winter as a time for hibernation, pets still need mental and physical stimulation, especially if outdoor playtime is limited by the cold. Interactive toys, puzzle feeders, and treat-dispensing balls can be lifesavers on those days when a long walk isn’t practical. Cats love feather wands and laser pointers, while many dogs enjoy games like indoor fetch or hide-and-seek with their favorite toy or treat.

Rawrum Tip: Rotate toys every week to keep things fresh and exciting. You can even make some DIY toys from household items, like a cardboard box maze for your cat or a homemade tug toy for your dog 🐶.

Nutrition and Winter Weight Management
In winter, just like us, pets may feel a little less inclined to move, which can lead to weight gain. Make sure your pet’s diet aligns with their winter activity levels. High-quality, natural pet foods can help maintain energy levels and provide the right nutrients for a healthy coat and immune system. Consider adding omega-3s for coat health, or speak to your vet about any seasonal diet adjustments.

Rawrum Tip: If your pet is less active, consult with your vet about adjusting portion sizes or incorporating raw foods. Many pets thrive on a high-protein diet, which can support muscle mass and reduce winter sluggishness 💪🏼.

Grooming for a Healthier, Warmer Coat
Regular grooming is often overlooked in winter, but it’s essential for warmth. Keeping your pet’s coat brushed and free of tangles helps it insulate them better. Mats in fur not only cause discomfort but also reduce the coat’s natural ability to protect from the cold. Plus, grooming helps you bond with your pet and gives you a chance to check for any seasonal issues, like dry skin or cracked paw pads.

Rawrum Tip: After a grooming session, reward your pet with a treat or a little playtime to make it an enjoyable experience. You can also apply pet-safe balms to their paw pads to prevent cracking from the cold 🥶.

Stay Safe with Reflective Gear
With shorter days, it’s essential to keep pets safe and visible during evening walks. Reflective collars, leashes, and even LED tags are excellent ways to make sure your pet is visible to traffic in low-light conditions. Some jackets and coats come with built-in reflective strips, which can add another layer of safety.

Rawrum Tip: Remember to check that your pet’s collar is secure, especially if you’re layering a coat over it, to ensure they can’t slip out when they’re excited or if you have to pull them out of the snow! ❄️

Winter Enrichment: New Scents and Sounds
Pets are naturally curious and benefit from variety, so why not introduce them to new scents and sounds indoors? Scent games are fantastic for dogs and can be done by hiding treats in different rooms or under blankets. Cats enjoy sounds that mimic small animals, so look for toys that produce chirping sounds or crinkling noises.

Rawrum Tip: Rotate scent-based toys and make indoor "exploration zones" with toys or items that you bring in from outside (like pinecones) to keep their senses engaged without the need to brave the cold. 🌲

Consider Pet-Friendly Winter Supplements
During colder months, some pets may benefit from seasonal supplements, particularly for joint health. Cold weather can exacerbate arthritis in older pets, so supplements like glucosamine or fish oil can be beneficial. Always consult with your vet before introducing a new supplement to your pet’s diet.

Rawrum Tip: Many supplements come in treat form, which can make it easy to incorporate them into your pet’s winter routine without the fuss! 🤝🏼
